Finding African food on P.E.I.

Emmanuel Lagudah is an international student who recently moved to P.E.I. from Ghana. Finding Ghanaian food on the island has been an issue for him since he arrived. He is on a meal plan, but according to him he’s only familiar with the fruits, pizza and chicken.

“I’d say the food is not really my type but I’m trying to adjust to the food I’ve got here,” he said.

Lagudah joined the Ghanaian Association of P.E.I., a recently formed group created to bridge the gap between Ghana and P.E.I. to make its members feel at home.

Lagudah said he has not received any assistance from the association with locating African stores or restaurants.

“I don’t really feel happy, but I know as time goes on, I’ll be able to find more people and ask them stuff,” he said.

Martin Atta-Fynn is an executive member of the Ghana Association of P.E.I., according to him the association is new and developing.

“We as a group we haven’t had the opportunity to source out all the places that have Ghanaian items,” he said.

Atta-Fynn has his own recommendations for Ghanaian food.

“Currently we only have one restaurant representing our culture on P.E.I., that’s the

Jollof house.”

He also recommended stores like Freshest, Junco Market and Global Grocery.
