Louisa Mackula T.  was heading to lunch when she saw a sign.

Free pumpkin painting.

“Would you want to paint? ”  asked Emma Doucette, Event Coordinator, HCSU.

“Yes, I’d love to,” said Mackula with a smile.

She picked up a pumpkin with both hands and sat down next to a friend.

“I’m going for a horror theme,” she said.

Mackula is a holland college student who has had a long week filled with tests and assignments.

“I’m hanging in there,” she said.

Mackula is not alone.

That is why the Holland college student union is holding their first ever Halloween pumpkin painting.

“It’s to relax and have fun and unwind from all the classes,” Mackula said.

The Student Union heard from students, that there were not enough events. So, they added more this year.

At the pumpkin painting, there were a variety of colours and brushes available to paint with. About 15 students participated, more tables had to be added so more people could join.

It was like a group project with students passing paint to each other across the table.

Some students also grabbed pumpkins and left with them since they were free.

“Little things like this are easy for us to put on, they are really enjoyed by the students,” said Doucette.

The HCSU’s goal is to create a form of community in Holland college.

“This year we’re really pushing to create a sense of community not only at this campus but all Holland college campuses, to feel like one big college,” said Doucette.

The HCSU is getting ready for their next event, the Halloween costume context, happening October 31, 2023.
