While playing soccer in Ghana, Kevin Davis faced a potentially career-ending injury in his knee. He couldn’t walk for two weeks; an MRI scan was done, and it was determined that surgery wasn’t needed, but he was injected with a medication that was unknown to him. “I still don’t know what they injected into me,” he said. The medication didn’t help but his love of the game was strong. That love of the game begun in primary school when Davis was discovered by his physical education coach. “Mr Asare saw something in me,” he said. He also constantly heard of Ghanaian players like André Ayew, Asamoah Gyan and Michael Essien. “Why don’t I aim to be as big as these players,” he thought. When Davis moved to P.E.I. last year he made it a priority to continue playing soccer even though his knee still bothers him. “Sometimes it feels like my knee is going to explode when I over work myself, but I still play because I’m passionate about it and I love the sport,” he said. He currently plays with the Eliot River Ramblers, in the P.E.I. Soccer Association. He’s able to balance the game and practice with his computer science courses at UPEI. “It’s tough because I have games in the evenings and classes the next day, but I want to achieve my goals, so I see it more like a sacrifice,” he said. He aims to play professional soccer in 2024 and play in the 2026 World Cup in Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico in the Ghana national team. Regardless of what happens to his leg in the future, he still wants a role in the sport, be it physiotherapist or data analyst, he says. “If I end up not playing, I just want a role in the sport, I could miss my wedding day for soccer,” he said.
